Review: Sonic Triple Trouble
Three times the fun!

Note: This review is based on gameplay on the Sonic Gems Collection. Play on Game Gear may vary.

I'll be honest. I saw a commercial for Sonic Triple Trouble when it first came out. And I'll be honest, at first I didn't think it was a Game Gear title. Shut up.

I grabbed Sonic Gems Collection in February of '06, but in all honesty I'd never played Triple Trouble until over a year later. (After all, I'd mostly gotten it for Sonic CD.) The other day, I whipped it up and decided to give it a run.

Like most early games, story isn't really a huge issue. Sonic has to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds as usual. However, this time, he has to go through Knuckles and Nack/Fang in addition to Dr. Robotnik! All three appear as bosses in the game (though Nack/Fang is only fightable in special stages).

Story: 7/10

The game looks good for a Game Gear title. The colors are smooth, for the most part (with the exception of Sunset Park). Of course, it still suffers from 8-bit Game Gear graphics, but that's to be expected. With the exception of Sunset Park, the levels all look great,

Graphics: 7/10

Gameplay feels almost like a Genesis game, though obviously with a few Game Gear quirks (for instance, Tails can fly for the basic Up+1/2 instead of having to jump). The peel-out is useful as well for Sonic, and you get a brief moment of invincibility if you need it. The rocket shoes and spring shoes return from Sonic Chaos, though the latter is hardly as useful (half of the trees have springs hidden in them as it is). The zones play rather well, except for Sunset Park, with its colors merging rather "nicely" (meaning they blend so that sometimes it's hard to tell where the ground is). The bosses are also fine; once you get used to the fact that you can do a spin attack off of a spring, you should be fine. In short, it plays great.

Gameplay: 9/10

The music is of your typical style for the Game Gear games. That is, it's barely noticeable. I'll admit I concentrated more on the game than the music. That said, it's a bad thing that I don't notice it, considering I'm a sucker for Sonic music typically.

Music: 5/10

I like it, though. Sonic Triple Trouble, while arguably the easiest of the "standard" handhelds (a set that I include Sonic 1 GG, Sonic 2 GG, Sonic Chaos, and Sonic Triple Trouble; in the previous 3, I am currently stuck on one boss in each), is a great game for the oft-ignored Game Gear. The ability to play it on Gems Collection or on Sonic Adventure DX is an added plus for those who don't want to scour the Internet looking for them. And with levels that play longer than the other Game Gear titles (as evident by The Sonic Center's rankings), it makes for more fun (in my opinion) for just regular play than just time attacking.

Overall: 7.0/10
